Chios is the fifth largest Greek island in the north of the Aegean Sea. Lying close to Turkey across the Chios Strait, it is nicknamed the Mastic Island and is famous for the export of Mastic gum often called the ‘tears of Chios’. This beautiful island is one of the hidden treasures of the Aegean.
Dotted around the island are castles, medieval villages and Byzantine monasteries including the 11th-century Nea Moni, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The East coast has the picturesque capital, Chios Town with Arabic influenced on buildings that reflect a long history. From here you can see the coastline of Turkey. The vibrant central port, Prokymaia, has many tavernas, cafes and restaurants. In the square is the Ottoman Mosque, now a museum. The 16th century cathedral, Agios Vasileios and the 10th century Byzantine castle are very impressive.
This beautiful Greek island can be reached by ferry from Pireaus or you can fly to the local airport from other Greek cities. Accommodation is plentiful with boutique hotels, villas, apartments and a limited number of all inclusive venues.
Eating out is a fabulous experience and known for some exceptional dishes such as braised goat, eggplant pilaf and fresh seafood. Local desserts of loukamades or spoon sweets are on offer alongside the usual ice creams. Naturally you will be offered a drink of the locally made Mastica liqueur which tastes like heaven.
