A visit to the island of Symi reveals the spectacle of beautiful Italian architecture that dominates the view of the port. Access to the island is by ferry or speedboat from Rhodes and when you arrive you will see a picture postcard view of traditional houses in blue, terracotta and ochre yellow with red-tiled roofs.
The main town is in two parts. The port area, Gialos, is overlooked by an impressive clock tower and features a fisherboy statue and a Dove of Peace sculpture. Symi town has a cathedral, a town hall and a Naval museum where you can see how the island developed as a centre for sponge fishing. Around the town you can buy natural sponges as well as other beautiful Greek crafts.
The high part, Horio, is accessed by 500 stone steps. The walk up is worth the effort as you will see amazing views, an ancient castle and can enjoy eating and drinking around the picturesque square.
Accommodation on Symi is in rented apartments or houses. Alternatively there are boutique hotels set in restored neo-classical houses overlooking the harbour.
To the south-west is the famous monastery of the Archangel Michael at Panormitis. This 18th century monastery is stunning with magnificent icons and golden chandeliers. Visitors are respectfully requested to wear appropriate clothing in the monastery.
Symi has some lovely beaches with Pedi Beach a must see although you will need a lift or a taxi to get there. Noted for its peaceful and quiet atmosphere, Symi is a well-loved destination for anyone wanting a break away from the busier Greek islands.
