Set above the modern village rises the acropolis of Lindos, visited by thousands every year. A must visit when in Lindos.
A natural citadel which was fortified successively by the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Knights of St John and the Ottomans. This makes the site difficult to excavate and interpret archaeologically.
In classical times the Lindos Acropolis Rhodes was dominated by the massive temple of Athena Lindia, which attained its final form in around 300 BC. In Hellenistic and Roman times the temple precinct grew as more buildings were added.
In early medieval times these buildings fell into disuse, and in the 14th century they were partly overlaid by a massive fortress built on the acropolis by the Knights of St John to defend the island against the Ottomans.
The acropolis has views of the surrounding harbours and coastline.
Some scenes of the well-known film, The Guns of Navarone, were filmed at the Lindos Acropolis.
The entrance fee for the Acropolis is 12 euros for the full ticket and 6 euros for the reduced.
The Lindos Acropolis Rhodes is set high above Lindos, a fishing village on the South-East Coast of Rhodes Island, Greece.
You will find the acropolis 49km South of Rhodes International Airport.
Once visited, take a short trip into Pefkos for dinner at Happy Friends where you will find fabulous food and drinks.
