Pictures of the iconic windmills attract millions of visitors each year to visit Mykonos. Part of the Cyclades, Mykonos is known as the ‘island of the winds’.
Originally there were 28 windmills and there are still 16 remaining, some of which are used as hotels and apartments for tourists.
With a vibrant nightlife, Mykonos attracts many young travellers but it is also a fantastic place to visit for a family holiday.
Whilst the restaurants in Mykonos Town are known for their stunning views, they can be a little expensive but just wander through the narrow streets and you will find small family tavernas serving local dishes with wine and beers at very reasonable prices.
Mykonos offers a wealth of activities including boat trips, guided tours around the ancient ruins and wide sandy beaches with water sports. You can go on a wine tasting tour with a meal or take a trip up the mountain to Castle Panigirakis and watch the incredible sunset.
Mykonos is just 15 kms by 10 kms and many visitors stay in the main town but there are several other resorts. Agios Stefanos is 3.5 kilometres from the town and has many restaurants and accommodation.
When you visit Mykonos do not miss out on a trip to Ano Mera, the second largest village and one of the oldest. It has a beautiful monastery with a superb collection of icons and is quieter than the main town.
Ornos is a fishing port with a sheltered beach that protects you from the North winds.
Although small, Mykonos has everything you could want for a relaxed or adventurous holiday.
