Founded in the 15th century when the island was occupied by Venetians, is dedicated to the icon of the Virgin Mary.
The architecture is very interesting with a tower that was originally built as a defense but is now used as the belfry. Inside the monastery there are impressive frescoes dating back from more than 500 years ago and the lingering scent of incense gives you an extraordinary feeling of days gone by.
Situated in a large pine forest, this monastery is also connected to the patron saint of Zakynthos, Saint Dionisios who lived there in the 16th century as an abbot. Dionisios is called the saint of forgiveness because he saved the life of his brother’s murderer.
Although there are no monks housed at the monastery now, it is kept up by the local priest and villagers. This is a wonderful place where you can see this beautiful building and enjoy some quiet time away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
There are some lovely gardens and a small gift shop where you can buy a souvenir of your trip. A local taverna offers nice refreshments.
Anafonitria monastery is located in the northwest region of Zakynthos and Navagio Bay is just 3 kilometres away.
The monastery is 32.7 kilometres from the airport and around 30 kilometres from Zakynthos Town which is about a 40 minute drive.
