The Castle of Agios Georgios, also known as the Castle of Kefalonia, stands on a hill 320 metres high, towering above the villages of Travliata and Peratata. The Castle used to be the capital of Kefalonia for centuries.
The castle’s origins date back to the 12th century during the Byzantine era before falling into the hands of the Turks and finally blossoming into what it is today under the Venetian rule during the early 16th century.
There is a small entrance fee in order to explore the ruins, where you will also find various coats of arms from Venetian families! Visitors will enjoy the castle’s fantastic landscape views over Argostoli and the neighboring villages. It is also a great chance to visit the ruins of the Evangelistria medieval-era church and the church of Agios Theodoros!
The Castle is located on the top of a 320 metre high hill, near the village of Peratata and 5 km from Argostoli, the main town of Kefalonia.
