The Castle of Nerantzia (or Castle of the Knights) is at the port of Kos and dominates over the city. It was built in the 15th century by the Knights of Rhodes for the fear of the Ottomans. It is an iconic coastal fortress.
Along with Petronium (the Castle of Bodrum), it served to control the sea passage to the Holy Land during the Crusades.
In the late 14th and 15th century kos was densely planted with nerantzia (bitter orange trees) and lemons trees, hence the name. Built by the Knights Hospitallers, it is a great example of the knightly fortification architecture in the Dodecanase.
The Castle stands right at the port entrance, on a stretch of land that used to be an island.
