Located in Northern Greece and is the largest lake of Epirus. A great day out for all the family.
Epirus has a natural beauty that is unrivalled in the rest of Greece. It is an ideal destination for both winter and summer breaks. So, if you want unspoiled landscapes and to re-connect with nature, a visit to Lake Pamvotida is a must.
The city of Ioannina lies on the west side of the lake and is full of fascinating architecture including a Byzantine fortress and the Fetiche Mosque. Ioannina also has a Byzantine museum with many fascinating artifacts.
You can roam around the shores of the lake and there is a small fishing port where you can take a cheap boat ride to the island in the middle. This island has the very interesting Ali Pasha museum. This is where he was assassinated and there are still bullet holes in the floor!
The island has around 350 people living there and also houses no less than seven small monasteries. There are water activities on the lake and a castle to explore as well as the famous nearby Perama caves.
This is an outstanding area of Greece and is a world away from the traditional beach holiday but it is a place that will stay in your memory for a long time.
