Lake Vouliagmeni

A small brackish-water lake fed by underground currents seeping through the mass of Mount Hymettus.

The Lake is a mineral spa that is reported to have many healing properties for such ailments as eczema and dermatological diseases, neuralgia, headaches, disfiguring arthritis, chronic gynecological diseases, lumbago, sciatica and other problems.

The lagoon formed approximately 2,000 years ago. It was once a large cavern that collapsed following an earthquake. The outline of the collapsed cavern roof can be clearly discerned from a distance. The lake is recognized as a wonder of nature because of its unique appearance and the surroundings.

The underground thermal springs are approximately 50 to 100 meters deep and offer a natural and unique thermal spa experience. Swimming in the lake is more than pleasurable, it’s a holistic experience stimulating the swimmers’ energy and balancing their wellness.

The Garra Rufa fish – known as spa fish – are part of the ecosystem.

The lake is surrounded by beach chairs and umbrellas and there is a cafe-bar-restaurant that serves excellent food and hosts various events. The lake is fine for swimming and snorkeling for therapy as well as for pleasure and there is equipment for helping those who find it difficult or impossible to get into the water on their own.

During the summer Lake Vouliagmeni offers hot-spring baths, hydrotherapy and physiotherapy as well as a number of other services. It is also open in the winter for year round swimming. Children are welcome, in fact there is a playground and they host children’s parties.

A path that begins above the Lake leads to Faskomilia Hill, a natural area spread over 296 acres, which is perfect for hiking or cycling and overlooks the Attica coastline and Lake Voulaigmeni.

Visit and enjoy this wonderful spa lake now.

The Lake is located in the heart of the Athenian Riviera and is the hidden treasure of Attica’s nature. Its brackish waters, rich in salts and minerals, have a temperature between 22c – 29c degrees all year round and are known for giving relief to bone and muscle problems.

The lake is a great thing to see when visiting the Attica region. To find more great ideas of things to see and do in Attica, click here.
