Venetian Fortezza Castle

The Venetian Fortezza Castle is situated north of Rethymno on Paleokastro hill and is an imposing and important monument that is well worth a visit.

Crete was under the rule of Venice for some four centuries and the Venetians protected the island from attack by building fortresses.

As soon as you enter the castle you are immediately taken back to a bygone age. The fortress is so large that the entire population of the town could go inside and be protected. The huge armoury building is now used for exhibitions and cultural events.

In the central square is the Mosque of Sultan Ibrahim, which was originally a Christian Orthodox Cathedral. The Theatre of Erofili constructed in the castle during the 20th century has many cultural events during the summer. In the open area outside the castle lies a pentagonal fort that now houses the archeological relics recovered from inside the city.

From the bastion of Agios Nikolaos you get an amazing view over the city and harbour.

Fortezza Castle is is 67 kilometres from Chania airport and 89 kilometres from Heraklion airport. You can get there by bus or car.

Rethymno is the third largest town on Crete. As well as the fortress it boasts a beautiful old town that has stunning mansions, churches and several small mosques.
